Star Fox took the cover as the first Super FX chip game, with a roundup of Super Fighting Games, Pocky & Rocky, SimEarth, MechWarrior and Congo's Caper inside. A feature called The Koei Connection looked at the strategy publisher. Kid Dracula, Joe & Mac and The New Chessmaster covered the Game Boy pages.

It really ruffles my feathers the way Fox always gets the last shot.

Sweepstakes

A four-day trip to Camp Rollerblade in Los Angeles for the winner and a guest, valued at $5,000, with a Nintendo Power jersey to go shreddin' in for the runners-up. The same page announced the Mario Paint contest winners, led by Stephen D. Miller of Tucson, whose five video entries left the staff blown away.

Nester's Adventures

One-page strip · from p. 35

Nester carried on alone after Howard left Nintendo in 1991, walking into one game a month and finding out the hard way that reading the strategy pages would have helped.

Star Fox Team tryouts, the month the game arrived. Asked whether he can pilot a ship through a four-dimensional combat vortex of space, time and really ticked-off lizards, Nester says he can with his eyes closed and a dead skunk for camouflage; told to follow Slippy's lead through the first four arches for the double-shot laser, he knows exactly where he's going and flies into the scenery. General Pepper, lolly in hand, doubts he really needs any help — he seems to have an inflated opinion of his own abilities already.

Star Fox

Chapter 3 of 11 · 12 pages · from p. 48

Benimaru Itoh's serial ran alongside the game, with the Arwing pilots as the magazine drew them: Fox, Falco, Peppy and Slippy against Andross, with a subplot the game never had.

Chapter three. The Arwings have flown straight into an Imperial trap and a battle attack carrier is closing; Fara takes out the garbage until an ion missile knocks her out of the fight, and Fox makes a world-class save with the anti-grav sail before finishing the carrier with a Nova bomb. Falco grumbles that Fox always gets the last shot; Peppy calls him a real Renaissance Fox, like his father. Back on Corneria, General Pepper begins the story of Fox Senior — until Andross drops in by telekinetic amplifier to promise that young McCloud's soul will be shattered like glass.
