The Nintendo GameCube is Nintendo's fourth major home console, released in Japan and North America in 2001 and in Europe in 2002. A sixth-generation system, it competed with Sony's PlayStation 2, Sega's Dreamcast, and Microsoft's Xbox.
The GameCube packed a surprising amount of horsepower into a deliberately compact, brick-shaped chassis. It also marked Nintendo's first move away from cartridges, adopting a proprietary 1.5 GB miniDVD that kept the footprint small and piracy down, at the cost of the disc capacity its rivals enjoyed. Commercially overshadowed by the PlayStation 2, the GameCube nonetheless built a cult library that has aged remarkably well.
Fun fact Every GameCube has a carry handle moulded into the back of the chassis. Nintendo wanted the console to feel like a lunchbox you could grab on the way to a friend's house.
