The Wii is Nintendo's fifth major home console, released worldwide in late 2006. A seventh-generation system, it competed with Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3.
Rather than chase raw horsepower, Nintendo bet the system on motion control. The wand-shaped Wii Remote, paired with the bundled Wii Sports, broadened the audience for video games more dramatically than any console launch before it. The Wii went on to outsell both the technically superior Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, becoming the best-selling home console of its generation and reshaping what a mainstream video game audience looked like.
Fun fact Wii Sports shipped bundled with the console in every region except Japan, where Nintendo worried it would cheapen the platform's image. It went on to become the best-selling video game of all time anyway.
