Benimaru Itoh's serial ran alongside the game, with the Arwing pilots as the magazine drew them: Fox, Falco, Peppy and Slippy against Andross, with a subplot the game never had.
Chapter one. Fox McCloud, Falco, Peppy and Slippy are space pirates — a people's appropriation committee, Peppy insists, raiding only Imperial scows — whose latest haul is fuel packets, a case of hyper-Twinkies and an android pig named Herbert. A holo-telegram from Director General Pepper of Corneria's Planetary Defense Council changes that: the Emperor Andross's lizard troopers are attacking, Corneria has built the SFX Arwing, and it needs the best pilots in the system, even mangy outlaws. They stow away in a star freighter's hold and find a squad of Imperial lizards already aboard, ripe for relieving of the burden of command.
