Power Profile

Nintendo Power issue 41 profile of Ken Griffey Jr., page 109

This issue featured an interview with Ken Griffey Jr. — American baseball player (born 1969).

The Mariners' centre fielder and MVP of the 1992 All-Star Game, two years after sharing an outfield with his father, and the last guest the magazine profiled. He'd played since Atari, kept six arcade machines at home, set up an NES on the team plane for 120 days of travel a year, ran up the score on teammates in basketball, and lost to his brother Craig, then in A-ball, every year; his favourite game was Jordan vs. Bird, for the dunk contest. He finished with 630 home runs and went into the Hall of Fame in 2016 with what was then the highest vote share ever. He has since taken up photography seriously, shooting credentialed at MLB games, NFL sidelines and the Indianapolis 500.

When your brother beats you 36 to 6, that's bad.

Sweepstakes

A Clue Mystery Weekend at Great Gorge, New Jersey, with the board game's arrival on Nintendo systems as the excuse. The card introduced a trivia test to the Player's Poll, and the debut question was a softball: name Bart Simpson's youngest sister.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Chapter 10 of 12 · 16 pages

Shotaro Ishinomori's retelling of the Super NES game, drawn in the same year it was released and following Link from the rainy night at the castle to the Dark World.

Chapter ten, 'To Turtle Rock... and Zelda!' Link sails across the ice in search of a map, which the ice-wizard Kholdstone calls his greatest treasure and raises an army of Stalfos to keep from him; a room full of boneheads later, Link has it. It tells him to strike the rock with thunder, and the Master Sword raised on the summit brings down the lightning that opens Turtle Rock. Inside waits Trinexx, a three-headed serpent of fire and ice — and Roam, who followed Link all this way to see which of them is truly the legendary hero.

Super Mario Adventures

Chapter 10 of 12 · 8 pages · from p. 62

Charlie Nozawa's twelve-part comic, in which Bowser proposes to the Princess, Yoshi eats everything in reach and Luigi gets no respect. Collected in a book by Viz the following year.

Chapter ten. Bowser has the best hypnotist in the country putting the Yoshis into trances and a blushing bride's gown on order. Cornered by the Boos, Mario puts on a doctor's disguise and diagnoses a Big Boo with anthrophobia — a fear of humans going back to the hoodlums who stuffed him in his locker every day — and talks him round with the size of the universe. The ghosts drift off to tell the Koopa King about it, and the brothers have their escort to the castle.

Nester's Adventures

One-page strip

Nester carried on alone after Howard left Nintendo in 1991, walking into one game a month and finding out the hard way that reading the strategy pages would have helped.

Prince of Persia. A turbaned swordsman tells Nester to fear his steel; Nester laughs in the face of fear, having once snapped a wet towel at terror, and asks if he can lead when it comes to dancing with doom. The one way to win a duel, he's told, is attack, attack, attack — never back down, never run, never parry — which he learns well enough to turn the tables, and is then told cunning was all a pack of lies.
