Power Profile

Celebrity profile · Volume 36
Nintendo Power issue 36 profile of Melissa Joan Hart, page 109

This issue featured an interview with Melissa Joan Hart — American actress, director and producer (born 1976).

Clarissa on Nickelodeon's Clarissa Explains It All, the show that talked straight to camera and used computer games to make its points, in its second season and the network's first hit with a girl in the lead. She and TV brother Jason Zimbler, who ran to his Super NES between scenes, reviewed Lemmings and Super WWF WrestleMania; she liked the puzzle and found the Lemmings too small to tell apart. Four years later she was Sabrina the Teenage Witch for seven seasons, then Melissa & Joey for five; she now directs television and hosts, and has never really been off the air.

I'm not as much into computers as Clarissa is. We sort of dress alike, but my clothes match!

Sweepstakes

The winner and a guest spent a day as Nintendo Power editors at headquarters near Seattle, had lunch at Cafe Mario, picked up a Super NES and saw the sights. The trip was valued at $2,000, modest by the standards of the arcade cabinets and movie sets around it.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Chapter 5 of 12 · 16 pages

Shotaro Ishinomori's retelling of the Super NES game, drawn in the same year it was released and following Link from the rainy night at the castle to the Dark World.

Chapter five. With the Master Sword in hand, all that remains is to rescue Zelda — but every approach to Hyrule Castle is blocked by Agahnim's sentries, and the full moon rises tomorrow. Only a bird could get in, says a village boy, and the soap bubbles in the washtub give an old woman the idea: Link goes over the walls in a patchwork balloon and drops into the castle bedding. He finds Agahnim himself, who tells the so-called legendary hero that it is only a matter of time now that the tribe of evil holds the power of gold — the Triforce.

Super Mario Adventures

Chapter 5 of 12 · 8 pages · from p. 62

Charlie Nozawa's twelve-part comic, in which Bowser proposes to the Princess, Yoshi eats everything in reach and Luigi gets no respect. Collected in a book by Viz the following year.

Chapter five. The Princess floats down on her cape-achute while Mario and Luigi look for a way across a piranha-infested moat, ride a Koopa Express rail car past a Koopa copter, and Bowser rages at the Koopalings for letting his bride escape. Then the tables turn: a Mechakoopa message says the Koopa King has Mario, and the ransom is the Princess. With her still out cold, Friendly Floyd's makeup kit gives Luigi an idea — 'do I look like I need a makeover?' — and a decoy Princess is on her way.

Nester's Adventures

One-page strip · from p. 100

Nester carried on alone after Howard left Nintendo in 1991, walking into one game a month and finding out the hard way that reading the strategy pages would have helped.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past's Ice Cave, where Link explains the plan — dash against the statue to release the good bee, then catch it in the net — and Nester promises teamwork. What follows is two nets, one bee, a fistfight over who got it first and the bee escaping through the wreckage; asked where Link and Nester are, Zelda is told they're perfecting their teamwork.
