A Link to the Past took the cover in a big Zelda feature, with The Empire Strikes Back, Terminator 2, Nightshade, M.C. Kids, Lemmings and Joe & Mac behind it. Tiny Toon Adventures and Mega Man II covered the Game Boy pages. The Zelda comic reached the Pendant of Power storyline in step with the game.

Nice move, ugly! But now you're playing with the Pendant of Power!

Nintendo Power issue 34 profile of Corin Nemec, page 109

This issue featured an interview with Corin Nemec — American actor.

Parker Lewis on Fox's Parker Lewis Can't Lose, television's closest thing to a video game, all sound effects and quick cuts, and an Emmy nominee for playing kidnap victim Steven Stayner in a TV movie the year before. He got an early look at A Link to the Past, couldn't put it down and still hadn't beaten Ganon, and named Super Mario World his favourite for the all-nighters and Yoshi. Parker Lewis ran three seasons; a decade later he was Jonas Quinn, the alien who joined SG-1 for a season of Stargate, and he has worked steadily in film and television since.

Let's face it, you have to be intelligent to play; you can't be a moron.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Chapter 3 of 12 · 16 pages

Shotaro Ishinomori's retelling of the Super NES game, drawn in the same year it was released and following Link from the rainy night at the castle to the Dark World.

Chapter three. Charged with the Pendant of Courage, Link needs two more pendants before the Master Sword will answer him, while Zelda waits in Agahnim's dungeons. Someone has set fire to Kakariko's library — Link pulls a boy out of the smoke in a bucket — and the target was the Book of Mudora, the key to the ancient Hylian script. With the book he reads the stone in the Desert Ruins, just like in the legend, and the chapter ends on the Lanmolas, the giant worms that guard the Pendant of Power.

Super Mario Adventures

Chapter 3 of 12 · 8 pages · from p. 60

Charlie Nozawa's twelve-part comic, in which Bowser proposes to the Princess, Yoshi eats everything in reach and Luigi gets no respect. Collected in a book by Viz the following year.

Chapter three. The brothers come out of the wrong pipe beside an enormous egg, which they plan to cook for dinner until it hatches a Yoshi; a rain dance for water brings a rain of Spinys instead. In Yoshi Village, Friendly Floyd the travelling salesman sells them Acme's Yoshi Language Learner for 3,000 coins, and they learn that this Yoshi is chairman of the Dino Chamber of Commerce, cooped up in the egg by Bowser — and that the Princess has been kidnapped, again.

Nester's Adventures

One-page strip · from p. 100

Nester carried on alone after Howard left Nintendo in 1991, walking into one game a month and finding out the hard way that reading the strategy pages would have helped.

A history strip with no game in sight: Nester turns up in revolutionary France — liberty, equality, toga parties — and is picked out by Napoleon as the one opponent short enough to be an even match. Napoleon fires a cannon through the wall to prove the measure of a man is not his size; Nester lands on him, boot first, and asks how it tastes. Stay tuned for Waterloo II.
