Power Profile

Celebrity profile · Volume 33
Nintendo Power issue 33 profile of Kellie Williams and Darius McCrary, page 109

This issue featured interviews with Kellie Williams — American actress, Darius McCrary — American actor, rapper, producer (born 1976).

Laura and Eddie Winslow on Family Matters, the siblings of ABC's Friday night and the family Urkel kept crashing. Both were handed Super Off Road for the Super NES and gave it, in Darius's word, the awesomest review; nearly everyone on the show owned an NES or a Super NES, Darius was composing an album, and Kellie described herself as a normal kid who happened to be an actress. Family Matters ran nine seasons. Kellie Shanygne Williams left acting to raise a family and run youth programmes in Washington, D.C.; Darius went on to voice Jazz in the first Transformers film and to a run on The Young and the Restless.

They keep kids out of trouble—they're better than spray-painting walls!

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Chapter 2 of 12 · 16 pages

Shotaro Ishinomori's retelling of the Super NES game, drawn in the same year it was released and following Link from the rainy night at the castle to the Dark World.

Chapter two, 'Wise Man's Warning'. With Zelda recaptured and the King, under Agahnim's spell, offering a price on Link's head, Link asks after the Master Sword and hears the legend from an old man in the woods: the ultimate treasure of a prosperous people, its blade tempered to resist evil, sleeping deep in the Lost Woods. Only the pendants can wake it, so Link climbs to the Eastern Palace where the sage Sahasrahla is hiding, takes the Pendant of Courage from its armoured guardians, and swears to rise to the challenge of the pendants and destroy Agahnim.

Super Mario Adventures

Chapter 2 of 12 · 8 pages · from p. 68

Charlie Nozawa's twelve-part comic, in which Bowser proposes to the Princess, Yoshi eats everything in reach and Luigi gets no respect. Collected in a book by Viz the following year.

Chapter two. Out of the monstrous pipe in the palace garden comes Bowser in a Koopa copter, introducing himself with a rap as K-Man Koopa, the kind, kind king, and his proposal is that Princess Toadstool marry him or see her people turned to stone. Mario is struck rigid on the spot — the Minister of Massage is called to slap the sense back into him — and the Princess, thinking she can strike a deal, goes down the pipe after Bowser herself. The brothers plunge in after her, Luigi still wondering about dinner.

Nester's Adventures

One-page strip · from p. 100

Nester carried on alone after Howard left Nintendo in 1991, walking into one game a month and finding out the hard way that reading the strategy pages would have helped.

Super Castlevania IV, and Simon Belmont is teaching Nester the whip — if you want to destroy Dracula once and for all you have to master it — while Nester notes Simon's tried four times already. Nester's new technique relies on surprise and confusion, mostly his own, wrapping himself up and running from a spiked pendulum, until Simon says he who runs and returns to fight may find his foe has left. Nester says never ask questions of a man wearing leather underwear.
