Super Mario World took the cover with a 16-page feature as the Super NES launched, and a new Super NES Showcase department gave short takes on Super Castlevania IV, Final Fight and SimCity. NES features covered Smash TV, Wurm, Kick Master and Star Wars, and Final Fantasy Adventure led the Game Boy pages. Player's Pulse printed the reader ideas for contest prizes that led to this issue's American Gladiators trip.

This issue featured an interview with Bart Simpson — Fictional character from The Simpsons franchise.
Yes, that Bart, interviewed in character to mark Bart vs. the Space Mutants, with a plan to convert every desk at school into a video game and have grades based on points scored. Career plans at press time: fishing loose change out of the moat at Sir Putt-A-Lot's, or Vice President of the United States, and he wasn't taking questions about anything after Krusty the Clown came on. He was ten then and is ten now. The Simpsons has been renewed through its fortieth season, and Nancy Cartwright has voiced him for every one of them.
Forget shaking the T.V. set. I've tried it and it never works!

The winner and three guests attended a live taping of American Gladiators, a prize suggested by a reader named Chris Porco of DeWitt, Michigan after the magazine asked for contest ideas. Nintendo reserved the right to swap in $5,000 cash if no taping was available, and 50 third-prize winners got a redesigned jersey.

Nester carried on alone after Howard left Nintendo in 1991, walking into one game a month and finding out the hard way that reading the strategy pages would have helped.
'Nester's Excellent Adventures': at the Excellent Air Guitar Tryouts Nester tells the crowd to stand back or catch fire, and his act — more like a dog with fleas, someone says — gets him chased out of the hall by a crowd that includes a lady in polka dots. A phone booth saves him, Bill & Ted style, though the operator can't connect him to the French Revolution, and he hides in Lincoln Park with a historical dude reciting the Gettysburg Address, whose act could use some help: 'Born to be wild, Abe. Let's take it from the top.' Nester and the Wyld Stallions are coming soon.
