Power Blade's boomerang hero led the April issue, with Totally Rad, Sword Master, Monopoly and S.C.A.T. behind it. A feature called British Invasion looked at where the hits from Rare and other U.K. developers came from. A special announcement teased something big in store, and the Game Boy section kept growing.

I was hoping that if I acted like Nester he'd remember who he was. It doesn't seem to be working.

Power Profile

Nintendo Power issue 23 profile of Jeremy Miller, page 97

This issue featured an interview with Jeremy Miller — American actor (b. 1976).

Ben Seaver, the youngest brother on Growing Pains, and Kirk Cameron's off-camera food-fight opponent for six years running, peanut butter and toothpaste included. He'd gone on more than 350 auditions before landing the part, taught Kirk to play Super Mario Bros. when it was new, and had, by his own admission, been overtaken; his current obsession was StarTropics, and his family Tetris record was 289,000. He largely stepped back from acting when the show ended in 1992, returning to play Ben in the two reunion films, and has since spoken publicly about his recovery from alcoholism.

Acting auditions are a lot like playing Super Mario Bros. You have to be patient and keep on trying, no matter how hard it is.

Sweepstakes

Nintendo would fly the winner and three guests to a NASCAR race in the summer or fall of 1991, tied to Konami's Bill Elliott's NASCAR Challenge. Second-prize winners got jackets like the ones worn by Elliott's pit crew along with the game, and third place brought the jersey.

Howard & Nester

2-page strip · from p. 24

Howard Phillips, Nintendo of America's bow-tied Game Master, and Nester, the know-it-all kid who never took his advice. Two pages an issue from the first volume on, with a different game's world to get lost in each month.

Nester plays the amnesiac hero of Déjà Vu in a yellow trench coat and fedora, narrating in hard-boiled captions: wanted for murder, a safe combination from the house on Kedzie, no key to Joe's Bar on Peoria Street. His cabbie is Howard, who suggests the sewer since most of these places have basements — where the ticking is a croc, not a clock — and then warns against taking Siegel's car for a spin, which explodes on the keys. Nester walks out of the wreck thinking he's found a way inside; Howard was hoping that acting like Nester would jog his memory, and it hasn't.
